NOTE ON THE APPOINTMENT OF TRUSTEES TO MUNICIPALITIES
The AKP government has appointed trustees to 28 municipalities. 24 of these are DBP municipalities, 4
are AKP and MHP.
When a mayor is suspended or dismissed, the municipal councils elect a council member from among
themselves to office as deputy mayor. The difference between the way the AKP government handled
the cases of 4 non-DBP municipalities and 24 DBP municipalities is striking.
In the case of the latter 4 mayors, the government has appointed those already elected deputy mayors
as trustees.
However in the case of 24 DBP municipalities, the government has adopted an entirely different
position and appointed vice governors and district governors as trustee mayors.
The average vote per centage of DBP mayors is 58.5%, with the lowest being 39.08% and the highest
81.61%. They represent the will/votes of a total number of 483,008 voters out of 823,682 (in 2014).
The results of the 2014 Municipal Elections is provided in the table below.
