This year, we organized a total of 123 culture and arts events in our headquarters in Seyrantepe with the participation of our members, scholarship holders and other contributors. We organized 12 culture and arts trips for young people both locally and abroad in order to acquaint them with important cities, museums and countries. 125 students participated in our English courses. 42 of our 305 scholarship holders graduated. Next semester, we are planning to increase the number of our scholarship holders to 500. Project “Matrakchi Nasuh – 16th Century Genius” conducted by Istanbul Intercultural Art Dialogues Association (IKASD) was completed after nearly three years. The project, supported by many institutions including UNESCO, the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Touring and Automobile Association of Turkey, was presented in Vijenica halls in Sarajevo between 5-24 May 2015. The exhibition will draw to a close in September 2016 in Budapest. We were invited to several cities with the “10.000 Motorcycle Couriers Training Project" that we initiated in Istanbul. By the end of this month, more than 4000 motorcycle couriers received training and their required equipment. "A New Route of Tourism: The Great Master Sinan the Architect" project is about to reach completion. We are proud to present the project's documentary together with this issue. With the arrival of spring, we have begun to make repairs and renovations in our touristic facilities. At the moment, the restoration works in 10 historical mansions in Sultanahmet and 5 in Safranbolu, and the building in Antalya, Surici are in progress. The Regular General Assembly of our association gathered on 10 May 2015 in Istanbul Lutfi Kirdar International Convention and Exhibition Centre. I would like to thanks all members who attended the assembly, where our 2014 activity and financial reports and our projected budget for 2015 were approved. The cover story of this issue is the “Matrakchi Nasuh - 16th Century” undertaken by the IKASD. The Touring and Automobile Association of Turkey contributed to the project by printing the work called “Matrakchi Nasuh - The History of Sultan Bayezid." With my best regards, I hope that you enjoy the 382nd issue of our magazine. Recognizing that he mastered various disciplines, Suleiman the Magnificent decreed in 1529 that he is unprecedented in the Islam world and should be known as a respectable “Master”. On 28 April 1564, Matrakchi Nasuh passed away. The 450th anniversary of his death was celebrated within the scope of UNESCO Commemoration events. Istanbul Intercultural Art Dialogues Association launched a project named “Matrakchi Nasuh – 16th Century Genius” in order to communicate the qualifications of Matrakchi Nasuh and to introduce him correctly to the coming generations. Various historians, literary figures and artists contributed to the project. Supported by the Touring and Automobile Association of Turkey and Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism Directorate of Fine Arts, the “16th Century Turkish Music” album was prepared. Also, a documentrary was filmed by experienced historians and a young and dynamic production team. The project, which will be presented in 10 cities in 10 countries, was commenced in Sarajevo, Vijenica building with the contribution of IKASD, Touring and Automobile Association of Turkey, UNESCO Turkey, Turkish Embassy of Sarajevo, Central Municipality of Sarajevo and Sarajevo Directorate of Museums. <=:ʈ6/ I SUMMARY 73 Page 16 I TEST DRIVE Page 20 I TURING Renault Twizy Regular General Assembly The Regular General Assembly of Touring and Automobile Association of Turkey was held on 10 May 2015 between 1pm - 6pm in Istanbul Harbiye Lutfi Kirdar International Convention and Exhibition Centre's Rumeli Hall, with the participation of our esteemed members. Usually, they were surrounded by stone walls and had a stone piece showing the direction of the Kaaba. In addition to being used by common people, they were also used by armies on campaign. Since they did not have roofs, they were easy and less costly to build. Most of them were built as charity work by wealthy ladies of the city. The fountains in these structures were either sophisticated ones that had an altar or niche, or simpler ones that only involved a prayer stone. A few open prayer rooms in Istanbul were recently turned into mosques. Within the boundaries of the Istanbul city walls, no open prayer rooms were constructed to involve pulpits, but they only had a stone piece that was easy to move. These pieces were made in the form of tomb stones, therefore many of them were tossed into graveyards after the structure itself was destroyed. There are two striking examples of fountains with an altar that survived to the day. One of them is the Fatih Fountain in Gebze, Cayirova. The other one is the Ibnulemin Ahmet Agha Fountain in Uskudar, constructed in 1721. First, we should take a look at the history of electric-powered vehicles. Around the year 1800, the voltaic battery was invented. In 1832, the direct current electric engine was used for the first time, alternative current being yet unknown at the time. In 1837, the first electric vehicle was used on rails, because there were no land routes yet. In 1860, Plante invented the rechargeable lead accumulator. In 1890, Nikola Tesla, together with a couple of German inventors, discovered alternative current and used it in engines and generators, making it possible to convey electric power to longer distances. Between 1860 and 1900, internal combustion engines (ICE) were developed; however, since it was difficult to start the ICE and the transmission technology was yes non-existent, electric cars were very popular in the US. In 1913, Edison made the first commercial transportation car in Michigan, Detroit, which was the first electric taxi. In the meantime, ICEs were also improved and starting the engine became easier, allowing their use to become widespread especially after 1912. Decades later, in 1996, General Motors manufactured 5000 units of EV-1 (Saturn) electric cars. They reached 100 kmph in 9 seconds and their range was 144 km (lead accumulator) or 240 km (NiMH accumulator). However, due to the schemes of giant oil companies, these cars were recalled from the market and discarded. <=:ʈ6/ I SUMMARY 75 Page 34 I PRESIDENT Page 40 I WORLD Mehmet Feridun Dirimtekin Bosnia and Herzegovina Sarajevo welcomed us with its emerald green color... River Neretva accompanied us to Mostar, retiring in its lake while we rested in Jablanica. Right beside us was the Tito Bridge, a witness of the World War II, which was exploded by the chetniks of Tito. Later it was turned into a museum, but it looks like it has been left alone in the cold water, as if experiencing those days all over again. In Travnik, River Lasna greeted us. We watched the city and its castles, towers and minarets from the green hills. Plava Voda, a.k.a. the Blue Water, that quenched the thirst of Sultan Fatih the Conqueror, was our resting place in this city. In this issue, we would like to introduce to you Mehmed Feridun Dirimtekin, who was the chairman of Touring and Automobile Association of Turkey between 21.05.1976 and 25.09.1976. He was a soldier, archeologist, art historian who worked as a writer and administrator. He has been a senior honorary member of the board before being elected chairman during the Extraordinary General Assembly dated 21.05.1976. He performed this duty until he passed away on 25.09.1976. Feridun Dirimtekin and his wife belonged to the high society of Istanbul. They resided in one of the most prestigious buildings in Sishane, Istanbul. They always dressed elegant and stylish, and always happy. However, after Feridun Dirimtekin became the Director of Haghia Sophia Museum, they began to live in the lodging provided by the museum, located within the museum courtyard. When he retired, they move into an apartment in Nisantasi, where a tragic event occurred - Feridun Dirimtekin fractured his femur and could not recover again, passing away on 25.09.1976 because of cardiac failure. Feridun Dirimtekin became a member of our association on 10.04.1954. He engaged in both official and voluntary activities between 1954 and 1976, crowning his endeavors through his efforts as the Chairman of the Board between 21.05.1976 and 25.09.1976. He was a member of several societies such as the Association of Istanbul Lovers, the Turco-British Association, the Turkish-American University Association and the Istanbul Institute. We will always remember him as an elegant and successful member of our community. We were once again hosted by River Neretva, but this time in the southern city of Pocitelj. In those lands, it seemed as if you could touch water when you reach down and an apple tree when you reach up. There was also a dervish lodge, Blagaj Lodge, which helped spread Islam. Our last stop was Vrelo Bosne, which is the spring of the river that named after the city of Bosnia. The water that springs out keeps our martyrs company, floating around in the war graves. When you are in Bascarsija, you want to drink water from every fountain you see - the fountain at the corner of Husrev Bey Mosque, the one at the entrance of Bascarsija... because the waters of Bosnia are magical. People come back here to drink that water. We would like to come back, as well... So long, with love, Bosnia... 76 <=:ʈ6/ I SUMMARY Page 54 I NOSTALGIA 1939 Mercedes Benz 170V with W 136 body is the first collection automobile that the Ural Ataman Classical Automobile Museum ever owned.
