Turkish Foundry Association (TÜDÖKSAD)
TÜDÖKSAD in Brief
Turkish Foundry Association (TÜDÖKSAD) is founded in 1976 by leading foundry
industrialists and companies with the aim of providing support to enhance the economic
progress of the metal casting industry and assisting its member companies (metal casting
facilities, die casters and industry suppliers) to effectively manage all production
operations and profitably market their products and services.
TÜDÖKSAD is a non-governmental organization with voluntary membership, which
represents the leading firms, industrialists and managers of the foundry business. Our
Association having all of the largest foundries and most of the small-medium foundry
enterprises as our members, embodies Turkish Foundry Industry. As of June 2014, we
have 150 member companies and 255 industrialists and managers.

TÜDOKSAD member foundries account for 85 % percent of Turkish total foundry output
and they realize 90 % export of the Turkish castings.
Turkish foundry sector is actively represented by TÜDÖKSAD in national and international
platforms. TÜDÖKSAD promotes the interests of the metal casting industry in front of the
related executive branches of the government. TÜDOKSAD members are actively
participating to sectional committees and decision making bodies in national chambers of
commerce and industry, hence contributing to the shaping of the national policies and
priorities affecting the foundry industry.
TÜDÖKSAD is a member of the World Foundry Organization (WFO) since 1989 and
became a member of The European Foundry Association (CAEF), the organization union
of the European foundry industry, in 2007.
TÜDOKSAD supports the biannual Ankiros, Annofer TurkCast and Aluexpo fairs.
As a result of the prominent role and representing power of our association concerning
the foundry industry, in 1995, we have been entitled by a governmental decree to use
“Türkiye - Turkish” in our official name, where the official acronym TÜDÖKSAD comes
from - Türkiye Döküm Sanayicileri Derneği).

Turkish Foundry Industry at a Glance
Background
Metallurgy and castings are not new concepts for the Turkish foundrymen. The very first
metal was smelted in Anatolia nearly 9.000 years ago to make raw copper beads, later to
alloy it with arsenic, tin or zinc to produce warfare, household or personal goods. This
later progressed into the making of first wrought iron.
This heritage was later on passed over to the future residents of these lands, namely
Romans, Byzantines, Seljukians and the Ottomans.
A new era in the Ottoman industrialization has begun in the 19th century to catch up with
the western world. New foundries have been established to produce mainly military
products, stoves and sanitary piping.
The industrialization movement has progressed further with the establishment of the
Republic in the 20th century. During this period, the investments were carried out by the
State. Starting from 1950’s, with the increasing private capital investments in foundry
sector, the establishment of modern facilities accelerated. Towards the end of the last
century, Turkey has become a major supplier of foundry products for Europe.

The Turkish foundry industry, despite its deep-rooted and long history on the background,
experienced relatively slow growth until the 1990’s. Starting in early 1990’s, the foundry
industry year over year growth rate reached double digits. The metal casting production
(in tons) and in value (in EUR) between the years 1960-2014 are given in the Table 3.
Major growth areas are in the ductile iron and aluminum castings, all triggered by the
domestic and EU demand growth in automotive, agricultural machinery and heavy
construction equipment (Figure 1).

Production and Global Position
Foundry production increased by more than 700 % between the years 1960 - 2005. The
total production volume of 161.000 tons reached 764.350 tons in 1995 and exceeded the
million tons threshold limit in 2005 with the production of 1.121.200 tons of castings. The
production reached its peak level with 1.316.500 tons in 2007. Affected by the global
economic crisis, it dropped to 1.030.000 tons in 2009. 2010 was a recovery period for the
foundry industry and the sector realized 26 % growth. With the production volume of
1.750.000 tons in 2014, Turkish foundries performs growth 6 years in row.
According to AFS’s 46th Census of World Casting Production, Turkish foundry industry
production in 2013 constitutes 1.5 % of the world production. Accordingly, Turkey’s
global ranking is 12 (Figure 2) and Turkey holds 4th rank in the EU region (Figure 3).

Imports and Exports
Raw material production of Turkey for foundry sector does not meet the market demand.
As a result raw materials are being imported. Besides raw materials, most of the foundry
machinery and equipment are also imported.
Table 4 below shows the export figures by years. Between 1990 and 1995, exports of
Turkish foundry products increased by more than 400 % and from 1995 to 2005, by more
than 735 %. This steady increase is interrupted in 2007 and 2008 by the global economic
crisis. In 2007 there is a negligible loss of 11.000, tons which corresponds to 1,4 % of
decline. However, in 2008 the decline is sharp: 11 % decrease of export volume and a
reduction of 84.300 tons compared to the previous year. Turkish foundry export reached
its peak level in 2014, where the export value is near to reach 3 billion euros. The export
volumes and year by year growth can be seen in the Table 4 and the export/product
distribution is given in the Figure 4.

In 2014, 60 % of Turkish casting production have been exported (Figure 4). A substantial
part of the production has been exported to EU and to neighboring countries. In the total
export figure, EU countries’ share is 77 %.
Current Trends in the Turkish Foundry Sector
The structure of the foundry industry and its production composition underwent drastic
changes over the years. In 1970’s, 62 % of the total grey iron castings was produced by
small foundries, whereas this figure dropped to 30% in 2005. Figure 1 and Figures 5 to 7
highlight the trend and change of metals castings from 2000 to present, with ductile and
aluminium castings increasing their share in the market.
Approximately half of the ferrous output (grey and ductile iron) is generated by 17
foundries whose annual capacity ranges from 30.000 tons to 180.000 tons. 102
TÜDOKSAD member foundries account for 80 percent of Turkish total foundry output.
This represents a major shift in the production of the numerous smaller foundries that
dominated the industry in the late 1970s. The total grey iron output produced in small
foundries dropped from 60% in 1977 to 27% in 2008.
In 2012, the total number of operating foundries is 929; of which 161 are big foundries.
The number of SME’s is 371 and of micro foundries is 397. There are also 8 public and
military foundries but their production is negligible.
Turkish foundry industry is on its expansion phase based on strong domestic demand and
on its export capability.
The capacity utilisation rate is 70 % in 2014. Turkish Foundry Industry has invested over 3
billion US $ in the last 10 years for plants and equipment with up to date technology and
achieved an installed capacity of 2 Million tons in Iron, 0,3 Million tons in Steel and 0,4
Million tons in Non ferrous castings in 2015.
In addition to the machinery and equipment investment, the sector heavily invested also
on human capital, on training, on research and development, as well as quality. Many
foundries hold internationally valid ISO 9002, QS 9000, ISO 14001 and ISO 16949
certificates.

Products supplied at favourable prices, coupled with good service, simultaneous
engineering, value analysis, just in time delivery, prompt reaction to design changes,
flexibility, up to date technology and reliable quality will be the principal priorities for the
further growth of Turkish foundry industry in the global market place in the coming
decades.
