EFDAL PRIVATE KINDERGARTEN 2008-2009 ACADEMIC YEAR ENGLISH SKILLS REPORT FOR KINDERGARTEN APRIL Dear parents, This month, in our English classes, we learned animals, prepositions, and action verbs. As usual, we also practiced and revised the topics of the previous months such as colors, jobs, furniture, and food. The students were able to identify different animals by their English names, talk about what they are doing, and ask each other questions. Animals were taught through different games we played in class. We first tried to identify the animal vocabulary that the students already knew and built up new vocabulary over those. We did dictated coloring about animals as well. We did a cutpaste activity where we cut out animal pictures and categorized them according to where they live. Games were played with flashcards where the flashcards were laid out on the floor and the students lined up on opposite sides of the cards. The teacher called out an animal and the first student to pick it up earned one point. The students enjoyed this game very much. Prepositions were practiced by different activities where students had to place objects according to the prepositions their friends tell them. We did dictated coloring activities where the students had to color objects according to their places. Action verbs were taught through different games. Animals and action verbs were taught together and worksheets were done where students had to categorize animals according to what they can do. Some of the games we played were Simon Says, Listen to the Leader, and Freeze. The students really enjoyed this topic and the activities we did to practice the new vocabulary words! The topics we worked on were: Action Vocabulary Grammar jump, swim, swing, climb, hop, run, walk, crawl, fly, turn around, dance, freeze, sit down, stand up, stamp, tiptoe, and kick. I can (run). I can’t (fly). I can ________. I can’t ________. They practice these words with a game called Simon Says which was teacher-led and student-led. We acted out the story. We did worksheets to practice matching the animals and their actions. Once the students were comfortable with the vocabulary we mixed in past grammar and vocabulary topics for some review. The subjects we reviewed were: colors, numbers, animals, toys, prepositions, shapes, food and house vocabulary. One game we played incorporated all these past topics. It’s called “football crazy” and the students are put into 2 teams. They came up one at a time and had to randomly draw a question. I read them the question and if they could answer it correctly they got to kick the small soft ball into a goal. They accumulated points this way for their team. Another game was Bingo which is similar to tombala.
