Ottoman Turkish Literature LITR.303 Fall 2011 INSTRUCTOR: Sooyong Kim <[email protected]> Office: SOS Z08D, x1141 Office Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays 14:00-15:00, or by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES This course surveys Ottoman Turkish literature from the fifteenth to the early-twentieth century, across a variety of genres ranging from a satire in verse to a modernist novel. We will consider the aesthetic principles that informed the tradition, as well as issues of convention and invention, persona and autobiography, and representation and gender. We will also address whether literary-critical approaches derived from the Western canon are appropriate for the Ottoman context. The class will be discussion-oriented, so please come prepared. Grading will be based on four requirements, assessed equally: 1. Regular attendance and participation, including one or two class presentations on an assigned reading 2. A gazel writing project in two parts, the details of which will given in due time 3. A midterm essay (4-6 pages); topics will be provided but you can choose your own 4. A final essay (6-8 pages); topics will be provided but you can choose your own.
