ARKROYAL on Pickering was designed as a hotelas-garden that would double the green-growing
potential of its site. Adorned by frangipani and palm
trees and draped with tropical plants, curvaceous
sky-gardens are cantilevered at every fourth
level between the blocks of guest rooms. Greenery flourishes
throughout the entire complex, and the trees and gardens of the
hotel appears to merge with those of the adjoining park as one
continuous sweep of urban parkland.
The PARKROYAL on Pickering occupies a long and narrow site
on the western edge of the central business district, between
Hong Lim Park and the HDB apartment blocks of Chinatown,
and overlooks the historic shop house district between the park
and the Singapore River. The development could thus respond to
many varied environments, it could provide public connections
between those zones, and as the building would be extremely
visible, the architects could make a grand (and green) urban
gesture.
A twelve-storey tower above a five-storey podium is placed on an
E plan, so that all guest rooms look north to the park and/or into
the sky gardens, whilst the services and the external connecting
corridors were placed on the southern elevation. As the hotel is
‘self-shaded’ – by the projecting sky gardens and the adjacency
of the three room-blocks , and shielded from early morning and
afternoon sun by adjoining buildings, the rooms could be fully
glazed (by low-emissivity glass) without external screening
devices.
The podium represents a monumental embellishment to the
Singapore streetscape, and has thus immediately achieved
something that no other recent building has even attempted in
the city. Referred to by WOHA as ‘topographical architecture’,
stratified layers of pre-cast concrete weave through a modular
grid of cylindrical columns without interruption, and without
acknowledgment of the boundaries between exterior and
interior. Cascades flow down from swimming pools and garden
terraces on the podium roof, over the ‘eroded rock-forms’ of the
striated mass, and into crevices and ledges from which trees and
vines can thrive.
The PARKROYAL on Pickering is a very public and very
Singaporean hotel. The architecture responds specifically to the
intricacies of the city, through the height of the ubiquitous tree
canopies, the size and orientation of the adjoining tower blocks,
and the proportions of the historic streetscapes, and therefore
retains a human scale at all times, in stark contrast to the generic
abstraction of the surrounding office buildings.

Yeşillik adeta oteli kaplıyor ve doğanın içindenmiş gibi bir görüntü ortaya çıkıyor. Otelin doğayla uyumu,
bahçelerinin büyüklüğü ile ağaçların yoğunluğu, otelin etrafını saran
parkların bir parçasıymış gibi durmasına sebep oluyor.
Pickering’deki PARKROYAL, şehirdeki işletme ve ticaret bölgesinin
batısında, Hong Lim Park’ın ile
Chinatown’daki HDB apartmanının
arasında yer alıyor. Otelden tarihi
dükkan evi ile Singapur deresi görülebiliyor.
Otel, konumundan şehrin bir çok
bölgesine geçitler sayesinde değerlendiriliyor ve şehrin her yerinden
görülebiliyor. Konumu, mimarların
ve müteahhitlerin yaptıkları emeklerin fark edilmesini, değerlendirilmesini sağlıyor. Havuzlar, bahçeler
ve antik taşlar üzerinden akarsular,
ağaçların ve yeşilliklerin olduğu
bölgelere akıyor. Böylece ağaçlar
sağlıklı bir şekilde yetişebiliyor.

On the ground the contours create dramatic
outdoor plazas and gardens which flow
seamlessly into the interiors. Greenery from
the park is drawn up in the form of planted
valleys, gullies and waterfalls.
The landscaping also conceal openings to the
above ground car parking while allowing in
air and natural light. The top of the podium
is a lush landscaped terrace housing the
development’s recreational facilities, with
infinity edge pools opening up unobstructed
views of the city. Birdcage cabanas perched
over the waters add interest and delight.
The crisp and streamlined tower blocks
harmonize with surrounding high-rise office
buildings. They are attenuated into an opensided courtyard configuration, breaking down
the ‘wall of buildings’ effect and maximizing
views and daylighting into the building.
Blue and green glass creates a patina that
recalls the waters of Singapore River adjacent.
Lofty 4 storey sky gardens bring lush greenery
directly to the rooms and breaks down the scale
of the building.
Corridors, lobbies and common washrooms
are designed as garden spaces with stepping
stones, planting and water features, which
create an alluring resort ambiance with natural
light and fresh air, instead of being 24-hour
energy guzzling air conditioned spaces. Tall
overhangs work together with leafy foliage
to screen these spaces from the weather and
direct sun.
A total of 15,000m2 of sky gardens, reflecting
pools, waterfalls, planter terraces and green
walls were designed; this is double the site
area or equivalent to the footprint of Hong Lim
Park!
A diverse variety of species ranging from shade
trees, tall palms, flowering plants, leafy shrubs
and overhanging creepers come together to
create a lush tropical setting that is attractive,
not only to the people but also to insects and
birds, extending the green areas from Hong
Lim Park and encouraging bio-diversity in the
city.
These landscapes are designed to be selfsustaining and rely minimally on precious
resources. Rainwater collected from upper
floors irrigate planters on the lower floors by
gravity supplemented by non-potable recycled
Newater, which will also be used for all water
features.
Photovoltaic cell arrays on the roof will power
grow lamps and softscape lighting, making
these Singapore’s and perhaps the world’s first
Zero Energy Sky gardens! The hotel officially
opened in January 2013.
Pickering’deki PARK ROYAL Oteli kalabalık

otellerindendir. Otel’in yapısı, şehrin karmaşıklığına hitap ediyor. Şehrin her yerinden görülebilen ağaçları ile kullanılan kule blokları, diğer
tarihi eserlerle uyumlu olması, yine şehrin görünüşüyle uyum içinde olmasına sebep oluyor.
Zemin katta, otelin dış hatlarının etkileyici plaza görünümü, iç tasarıma uyum sağlıyor. Parktan gelen yeşillikler, otelin bahçeleri ve akarsularıyla birleşiyor. Araba park yerleri binanın dış
tasarımını etkilemeyecek şekilde gizlenmiş.
Kule tepesindeki teraslar; bahçe düzeni, manzaraları ve sınırsız akarsuları ile bulunduğu
bölgenin, çok güzel ve yeri doldurulamaz bir
parçası haline gelmiştir. Akan suların üzerinde
yer alan kuş kafesleri de var olan güzelliğe güzellik katıyor.
Yapılan tasarımda 15,000m2’lik bir alana; gökyüzü bahçeleri, akarsular, havuzlar, yeşilliklerle
kaplanmış duvarlar, ağaçlandırılmış teraslar.
Yapıt, Hong Lim Park’ın tam 2 katı büyüklükte.
Bitkilerdeki çeşitlilik; gölgelendiren ağaçlar,
uzun palmiye ağaçları, çiçekli ağaçlar, yapraklı çalılar, sadece insanları çekmiyor, aynı
zamanda parkın yeşillikleri arasında yer alan
hayvanların ve böceklerin de ilgisini topluyor.
Bu durum, doğa dostu olup, düzeni bozmadan,
uyum sağlamasını ve şehir için sağlıklı bir ortam hazırlanmasını sağlıyor.
Bu tür yapılar başka kaynaklara gerek olmadan kendisine gerekli desteği sağlayabiliyor.
Yukarıdan akan yağmur suları değerlendirilip,
su sisteminden aşağıya taşınıyor ve sulama ihtiyaçları için kullanılıyor. PARKROYAL Otel’i
2013 yılından beri hizmet veriyor.
