COURSE INFORMATION COURSE DESCRİPTİON: In this course which is the continuation of the fall semester, the fundamental musical theories necessary for students to read, write, perform and understand music are covered. COURSE TYPE and COURSE LEVEL: Must: yes Core: yes Elective: Minor Related: Elementary(Basic):yes Intermediate: Advanced: Specialised: COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course covers the issues on intervals, converting intervals, converting tunes, intermediate sounds in Turkish Music, changing marks in Turkish Music, pitch names and places in Turkish Music system, width of the intervals, full quartets and quintets forming Turkish Music, other special quartets and quintets forming Turkish Music scales, scales and names and duties of scale sounds, harmony and disharmony in Turkish Music scales, expansion of the scales, types of penultimate sounds before the end note of the original mode, maqam (mode), course, equipment, transpose, forming scales, definition of rhythmic pattern (usul), rhythmic pattern numbers and measures, level in rhythmic patterns, beating rhythmic pattern, simple and combined rhythmic patterns, writing rhythmic pattern for hand and percussions, rhythmic patterns as small as five beats (nim sofyan, semai, sofyan, Turk aksagi). COURSE METHODOLOGY: Basically the explanation and application method is employed in the lessons. Question&answer and discussion methods and applications on piano are also employed in order to strengthen the data given to students. In addition, certain assignments covering the issues to be discussed throughout the term will be given to students and these assignments will be influential on the grade they get in examinations. REQUIRED&PROPOSED MATERIALS: Since the course will be made by using explanation and application methods, written sources on the subject matter are obtained and piano for application is provided. COURSE OUTLINE: Week - Topics 1st Week Music forms (motif, sentence, period), nuances, solfeggio, dictation, tempo and character terms, octet line. 2nd Week Resonance of sounds, resonance in tempo, measure (simple measure, combined measure, delayed measure), rhythm, metric structure (rhythm-tempo distinction), beating measure, syncopation. 3rd Week Intervals, fundamental sound, peak sound, ascending intervals, descending intervals, melodic intervals, harmonic intervals, simple and combined intervals. 4th Week Quality in intervals, non-harmonic intervals (harmonious, non-harmonious, cacophonic), diatonic and chromatic intervals. 5th Week Conversion of intervals, permanent, marching intervals, conversion of chords. 6th Week Turkish music and enharmonic diesis, changing marks in Turkish Music, Turkish Music system and duet intervals (pitch names and places), naming duet intervals, width of intervals. 7th Week Full quartets and quintets forming Turkish Music scales. 8th Week Written evaluation covering the discussed topics. 9th Week Special quartets and quintets forming Turkish Music scales. 10th Week Scales and names and duties of scale sounds, harmony and disharmony in Turkish Music scales, expansion of scales, types of penultimate sounds before the end note of the original mode, maqam (mode), course, equipment, transpose. 11th Week Forming scales, definition of rhythmic pattern (usul), level in rhythmic patterns, beating rhythmic patterns. 12th Week Simple and combined rhythmic patterns, writing rhythmic pattern for hand and percussions. 13th Week Rhythmic patterns as small as five beats (nim sofyan, semai, sofyan, Turk aksagi). 14th Week Written evaluation covering the discussed topics.
