Introduction STUDYING IN IRELAND For those wishing to meet and study with fellow international students from all over the world, as well as make lasting friendships, with friendly locals, Ireland is the perfect study abroad destination. It was voted by Lonely Planet as the world’s friendliest country in 2008 and 2010. Students experience Ireland’s rich cultural heritage and enjoy exploring its beautiful ancient landscapes. Many of Ireland’s writers such as Oscar Wilde and James Joyce are household names throughout the world. Students have the opportunity to visit world famous sites such as the Cliffs of Moher, the Blarney Stone and the prehistoric passage tomb at Newgrange. “Time spent as a student at NUIM is very special. Both highly collegiate and very personal, you will find it challenging and exciting” Professor Philip Nolan President, NUIM Many of the world’s leading companies have chosen Ireland as the location for their operations in Europe: Google, Facebook, Apple, Intel, Paypal, Microsoft, Twitter, Pfizer, Cisco, Amazon.com, eBay, Dropbox, Oracle, Salesforce.com... The list goes on! This is a direct reflection of the high standard of graduates that the Irish education system consistently produces. Frommer’s Guidebooks described Ireland as ‘a magical destination in nearly every way’. They named it their ‘favourite holiday destination 2011’. It topped their global poll because of its ‘spectacular landscape, history and opportunities to ramble and explore’. Our hospitable nature coupled with an unrivalled sense of fun, ensures that studying in Ireland is an unforgettable experience. STUDYING & LIVING IN MAYNOOTH Maynooth is Ireland’s only university town. It traces its historical significance back to the 12th century and combines this legacy of medieval origins with its location in the beautiful Irish countryside while being just 25 Kilometres west of the centre of Dublin, Ireland’s capital city. Today, it is a charming and busy town with many shops, cafes, public transport options and general services. It is home to a vibrant local community that offers students abundant opportunities for a very enjoyable social life. Maynooth has excellent transport connections to Dublin city centre and the rest of Ireland, providing the ideal location from which students can explore the capital city as well as the whole island of Ireland during their time here. National University of Ireland Maynooth’s location gives it a unique character among the Irish universities. This has resulted in the development of a strong sense of community both within the college and in its relationship with the surrounding area. Living at NUIM ABOUT THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH With over 9,000 students from more than 90 countries, National University of Ireland Maynooth is Ireland’s fastest growing university. National University of Ireland Maynooth is a University of contrasts. It has a tradition of academic excellence going back to the founding of St Patrick’s College in 1795, but also, having been established as the National University of Ireland Maynooth in 1997, it is both Ireland’s youngest university and Ireland’s second oldest university at the same time! This contrast is mirrored in the National University of Ireland Maynooth’s two beautiful campuses. The South Campus, an older complex of fine nineteenth century buildings, and the North Campus, a modern complex of teaching, research, accommodation and support facilities. “The accommodation was great. The apartments were huge and I had my own bedroom and bathroom.” Gabriel Lima Brazil ACCOMMODATION Student accommodation will be in on-campus apartment–style residences. Each student will have their own single, en-suite room within a four to five bedroom apartment. Each apartment has a fully furnished kitchen and a living room/dining room area. Internet will be available through LAN cables in each bedroom. Cables are available at reception on payment of a €5 refundable deposit. MEALS Students will receive meal vouchers for the university cafeteria: three meals per day, Monday to Thursday, and breakfast plus lunch on Friday. At weekends, students can do their own cooking or can purchase low-cost meals at the cafeterias and cafes on campus. There are various supermarkets within easy walking distance of the campus and student apartment kitchens are fully equipped. Dublin has many ethnic food stores for students who wish to purchase food from their home countries. Above: NUIM students relaxing in their on-campus accommodation.
