AGRICULTURAL FLYING IN TURKEY T he first aircraft in Turkey adapted for dusting and spraying were two THK Magisters converted in 1947 for use in the Government's campaign against the malaria mosquitoes. After the 2nd World War a dramatic expansion of the cultivated area of Turkey took place. At the start of the fifties managers of large government run farms as well as some large landowners in Çukurova in South-eastern Turkey had watched developments in other parts of the world and were convinced that aerial treatment of large land areas would be a solution also for Turkey. Consequently in 1954 several foreign agricultural aircraft operators were encouraged to set up business in Turkey. The next year, the Italian company Airon SPA operated 6 aircraft on spraying contracts in Turkey and a newly formed Turkish company, Uçakla Zirai Kurumu A.S. (UZK) started operations with two leased aircraft. The operations were successful and the next year UZK obtained seven PA-18-150’s, one PA-18-135 and a PA-22-150. Two more PA-18’s were added to the fleet in 1959 and another two in 1961. In addition to UZK one Italian and one Spanish company operated in Turkey in 1959 and 1960. By 1960 Turkey considered that it had acquired sufficient expertise in the field and further foreign participation was discouraged. Türk Hava Kurumu (THK) was now instructed to establish a spraying squadron to form a basis for agricultural flying in the country. In 1961 fifteen PA-18-150’s were procured for the operations and the year after five of the larger PZL.101 Gawrons were added. UZK obtained, in 1962, three modern PA-25 Pawnees and that same year a new company was formed by Hüseyin Türtat acquiring two Pawnees. With an area to be treated each year of about 1.5 million hectares no more expansion was seen until 1966. Then the initial ideas had been proven and during the late sixties and early seventies numerous small companies and co-operatives were established with the aim of providing agricultural flying services. In 1966 one company was founded, one more in 1967, four in 1968 and eight in 1969. This expansion naturally increased the number of aircraft added to the fleet: 1966 -2, 1967 -13, 1968 -16 and 1969 -38. Top left- The first Turkish spraying aircraft a THK modified Magister with only one seat. Top right- TC-IL6 a PA-18-150, one of the first Turkish agricultural aircraft delivered to UZK in 1956. Bottom left– TC-ILB the second Piper Cub on the register. 1 Whereas 28 new aircraft were procured by the sector in 1973 (11 A.188’s, 11 PA36’s, 3 S2R’s and 3 G-164A’s) this tapered off to 11 the next year and 3 for the succeeding years and the area sprayed stabilised at around 6 million hectares. In 1974/5 the first three helicopters arrived on the Turkish register in the form of heavily modified Bell 47/El Tomcat Mk.V’s obtained by a new company, HELTAR, for spraying cotton fields near Adana. In 1969, 87 agricultural aircraft were deployed to wide-spread areas covering various crops from fruit trees, cotton and beans to government forest areas. Expansion continued with a peak being reached in 1973 when 7.409.368 hectares were sprayed by 113 aircraft. Thirty-six companies used a variety of aircraft including Pawnees, Cessna 188’s, Callair A-9’s and Super Cubs. In 1979 the Turkish Air Force’s Air Supply and Maintenance Centre at Kayseri constructed an aircraft designed for agricultural flying. With the name Mavi Işik (Blue Light) this aircraft was tested for a year and then abandoned. However, with a constant need of around 100 aircraft this sector was an obvious target for an indigenous designed aircraft. In 1993 the area treated from the air was largely divided into 4 zones: Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and Çukurova/Adana. Where in the mid-70ties a maximum of 207 aircraft in operation was reached this later dropped off during the early eighties to 120. In 1993 the agricultural sector had due to economical recession and other reasons dwindled to 31 companies and 83 aircraft of which the Government controlled THK operated 16. As can be seen from the graphs below the Adana area occupied 2/3 of the companies and 1/2 the aircraft in service. A new law effective from January 1st 2007 prohibited chemical aerial spraying in Turkey. This has obviously meant the end of this long lasting sector of aviation. Some companies have ceased aircraft operations while others have diversified into taxi and training business and some have obtained work abroad.
