Previous meetings • The clubs have not faced each other since substitute Ignacio Salcedo's extra-time goal in Istanbul decided a tense European Champion Clubs' Cup first-round encounter on 3 October 1973. It was the only goal of the tie. • After Brian Birch's Galatasaray had earned a goalless draw in Spain, Juan Carlos Lorenzo's men won through with Salcedo's 100th-minute strike at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium, going on to reach the European Cup final that season, which they lost 4-0 to FC Bayern München after a replay. • That Atlético team included future Spain and Fenerbahçe SK coach Luis Aragonés and Manuel Reina, the father of Liverpool FC goalkeeper Pepe. • The teams for the first leg in Madrid on 19 September 1973 were: Atlético: Reina, Melo, Panadero, Adelardo Rodríguez (Salcedo, 45), Ovejero, Benegas, Ufarte (Fernández, 59), Aragonés, Gárate, Irureta, Becerra. Galatasaray: Yasin Özdenak, Ekrem Günalp, Aydın Güleş, Muzaffer Sipahi, Tuncay Temeller, Bülent Ünder, Metin Kurt, Tarık Küpoğlu, Haluk Kargın, Mehmet Oğuz, Şevki Şenlen. Match background Last updated 17/02/10 14:17:36CET Match background 3 Club Atlético de Madrid - Galatasaray AŞ MATCH PRESS KIT Thursday 18 February 2010 - 21.05CET (21.05 local time) Vicente Calderón, Madrid • The last time Atlético won a game in Europe after Christmas was in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup quarter-finals, when they defeated AS Roma 2-1 home and away. They are without a victory in eight springtime continental fixtures, having bowed out of last season's UEFA Champions League first knockout round to FC Porto on away goals following two draws. • Atlético won none of their UEFA Champions League group stage home games and signed off 2009 with a 3-0 loss to Porto at the Vicente Calderón. Their last home success was a 2-0 victory against Panathinaikos FC in this season's UEFA Champions League play-offs. • Galatasaray reached the round of 32 in the final two editions of the UEFA Cup, bowing out to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2007/08 but overcoming FC Girondins de Bordeaux last season before losing to Hamburger SV in the last 16. • A 1-0 loss at SK Sturm Graz in their final group game in December ended Galatasaray's ten-match unbeaten away European run, which stretched back to a 1-0 reverse at FC Steaua Bucureşti on 27 August 2008 and featured six wins and four draws. Team facts • Galatasaray coach Rijkaard came up against Atlético ten times in the Spanish Liga during his spell in charge of FC Barcelona. His record against the Rojiblancos was W3 D3 L4 (W1 D2 L2 in Madrid). • Rijkaard also faced Atlético as a player in 1987/88, his Real Zaragoza side losing 2-0 at La Romareda. • Rijkaard and Atlético coach Quique Flores met six times when the latter was in charge of Getafe CF (2004/05) and Valencia CF (2005/06 and 2006/07). Each coach recorded two wins, with the other two games drawn. • Leo Franco has been first-choice goalkeeper at Galatasaray since joining from Atlético in the summer. The Argentinian custodian spent five years at the Vicente Calderón following spells with Mérida CF and RCD Mallorca. • Milan Baroš and Tomáš Ujfaluši were long-standing colleagues with the Czech Republic national team, having both earned 78 caps for their country. The latter has now retired from international football. • Ujfaluši was in the Czech team eliminated from UEFA EURO 2008 by Turkey after surrendering a two-goal lead in a 3-2 defeat in Geneva. Arda Turan scored Turkey's first goal in a match that also featured his Galatasaray club-mates Servet Çetin, Hakan Balta and Mehmet Topal. • As they prepare for their 204th European game, Atlético are four goals shy of their 350th strike in UEFA club competition. • The tie concludes in Istanbul on 25 February with the winners to face the victors of the tie between Everton and Sporting Clube de Portugal in the round of 16 on 11 and 18 March, playing the first leg at home. The signing of David Villa from Zaragoza proved inspired, the striker's 25 league goals helping Valencia finish third. • The Spanish club went on to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2006/07 but a poor start to the following campaign cost Quique Flores his job in October 2007. • Took charge of Benfica in May 2008 and led the Lisbon giants to third place in the Portuguese Liga in what proved his only season in charge. He left in June 2009 and was appointed Atlético coach four months later following the dismissal of Abel Resino. Galatasaray AŞ: Frank Rijkaard Date of birth: 30 September 1962 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: AFC Ajax (twice), Sporting Clube de Portugal, Real Zaragoza, AC Milan Coaching career: Netherlands, Sparta Rotterdam, FC Barcelona, Galatasaray AŞ • Born in Amsterdam to a Dutch mother and a Surinamese father, Rijkaard made his Ajax debut at 17 and won three titles and the 1987 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup as a defender and then midfielder with the club before a disagreement with coach Johan Cruyff. • He spent his only season under contract at Sporting on loan at Zaragoza, winning the 1988 UEFA European Championship with the Netherlands before joining Milan. A mighty five-season spell in Italy brought two Serie A titles and successive European Champion Clubs' Cups in 1989 and 1990. • Returned to Ajax in 1993, winning two further league crowns and the last of his 73 Oranje caps before retiring in 1995 fresh from winning the UEFA Champions League, beating Milan in the final. • Moved straight into coaching as assistant to Netherlands coach Guus Hiddink. Given the senior job in 1998, Rijkaard led the Oranje to the semi-finals of UEFA EURO 2000™ before moving into club management, although Sparta were relegated in his only season in charge. • Given another chance by Barcelona in 2003, he won Spanish titles in 2004/05 and 2005/06, pairing the latter with a UEFA Champions League success to become only the fifth man to lift the trophy as a player and a coach. He left Barça in 2008, joining Galatasaray the following June. 4 UEFA : All-time total appearances in UEFA club competitions including all qualifying round matches Last updated 17/02/10 14:17:36CET Head coach 9 Club Atlético de Madrid - Galatasaray AŞ Thursday 18 February 2010 - 21.05CET (21.05 local time) Vicente Calderón, Madrid MATCH PRESS KIT Fixtures and results Club Atlético de Madrid Date Competition Opponent Result 30/08/09 League Málaga CF (A) L 0-3 12/09/09 League Real Racing Club (H) D 1-1 Jurado 43 19/09/09 League FC Barcelona (A) L 2-5 Agüero 45, Forlán 84 23/09/09 League UD Almería (H) D 2-2 Cléber Santana 28, Forlán 56 26/09/09 League Valencia CF (A) D 2-2 Agüero 7, Maxi Rodríguez 90+2 03/10/09 League Real Zaragoza (H) W 2-1 Jurado 2, Antonio López 66 18/10/09 League CA Osasuna (A) L 0-3 24/10/09 League RCD Mallorca (H) D 1-1 Forlán 52 (p) 27/10/09 Cup UD Marbella (A) W 2-0 Troyano 18 (og), Maxi Rodríguez 82 31/10/09 League Athletic Club (A) L 0-1 07/11/09 League Real Madrid CF (H) L 2-3 Forlán 79, Agüero 81 10/11/09 Cup UD Marbella (H) W 6-0 Jurado 12, Sinama Pongolle 17, Maxi Rodríguez 22, 31, 48, 64 21/11/09 League RC Deportivo La Coruña (A) L 1-2 Agüero 3 29/11/09 League RCD Espanyol (H) W 4-0 Forlán 27, Agüero 62, 85, Maxi Rodríguez 89 05/12/09 League Xerez CD (A) W 2-0 Forlán 29, Agüero 65 13/12/09 League Villarreal CF (H) L 1-2 Simão 37 20/12/09 League CD Tenerife (A) D 1-1 Jurado 22 02/01/10 League Sevilla FC (H) W 2-1 Dragutinović 48 (og), Antonio López 90+4 06/01/10 Cup RC Recreativo de Huelva (A) L 0-3 09/01/10 League Real Valladolid CF (A) W 4-0 Jurado 16, Forlán 32, Reyes 59, Agüero 90 14/01/10 Cup RC Recreativo de Huelva (H) W 5-1 Simão 22, 83, Agüero 24, Ujfaluši 39, Troest 62 (og) 17/01/10 League Real Sporting de Gijón (H) W 3-2 Forlán 13, Paulo Assunção 53, Ibrahima 66 21/01/10 Cup RC Celta de Vigo (H) D 1-1 Tiago 10 24/01/10 League Getafe CF (A) L 0-1 28/01/10 Cup RC Celta de Vigo (A) W 1-0 31/01/10 League Málaga CF (H) L 0-2 04/02/10 Cup Real Racing Club (H) W 4-0 Simão 9, Reyes 40, Forlán 62 (p), 71 (p) 07/02/10 League Real Racing Club (A) D 1-1 Forlán 24 11/02/10 Cup Real Racing Club (A) L 2-3 Valera 7, Jurado 50 14/02/10 League FC Barcelona (H) W 2-1 Forlán 9, Simão 23 21/02/10 League UD Almería (A) 28/02/10 League Valencia CF (H) 07/03/10 League Real Zaragoza (A) 14/03/10 League CA Osasuna (H) 21/03/10 League RCD Mallorca (A) 24/03/10 League Athletic Club (H) 28/03/10 League Real Madrid CF (A) 04/04/10 League RC Deportivo La Coruña (H) 11/04/10 League RCD Espanyol (A) 14/04/10 League Xerez CD (H) 18/04/10 League Villarreal CF (A) 25/04/10 League CD Tenerife (H) 02/05/10 League Sevilla FC (A) 05/05/10 League Real Valladolid CF (H) 09/05/10 League Real Sporting de Gijón (A) 16/05/10 League Getafe CF (H) Last updated 17/02/10 14:17:36CET Goalscorers Forlán 27 Fixtures and results 10 Club Atlético de Madrid - Galatasaray AŞ Thursday 18 February 2010 - 21.05CET (21.05 local time) Vicente Calderón, Madrid MATCH PRESS KIT Pos. This season the UEFA Cup has been reborn as the UEFA Europa League. The new name brings major changes to the competition, which has a new 48-team group stage with centralised marketing of broadcast rights, a presenting sponsor - Spanish car manufacturer SEAT - and an official matchball in addition to centralised sponsorship from the knockout stage and a new logo and visual identity. • Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions, from the group stage a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season. • Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from the 2008/09 season at least eight places are reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list also continues to exist – involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. • Away goals rule: For matches played under the cup (knockout) system, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, penalty kicks determine which team qualifies. • Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Europa League matches from the start of the round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Europa League this season or by a club that has transferred from the UEFA Champions League to the UEFA Europa League following the group stage. • Assistant referees experiment: The 144 UEFA Europa League group-stage games were overseen by six match officials, in an experiment endorsed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), with two additional assistant referees taking up positions alongside each goal. The additional assistant referees provided two extra pairs of eyes to monitor the game, informing the referee of incidents that he may otherwise have missed. • Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness.
