This is a film about a sculptor who tries to find
his true calling by helping a young boy with the
rare disorder, Tetra-Amelia syndrome.
Temmuz, a sculptor who finds himself suffering
from artist’s block, has repeated dreams of a
figure calling him and talking to him. Sitting in the
park one day, he notices İhsan, a young boy with
Tetra-Amelia syndrome who exactly matches the
face of his dream. He introduces himself to the
boy and his family, and a friendship grows up
between them. İhsan pleads with Temmuz to end
his misery, thinking it is the best for everyone.
Temmuz agrees, but he has another plan: to show
İhsan that they make each other complete.

After a summer apart, Deniz and her friends have
much to tell each other. The senior boys have
suddenly grown tall, new albums have been released, and the natural gas pipeline has finally
arrived in their hometown, Balıkesir. Yet the
anxiety involved in making university plans remains. When school resumes, Deniz grows closer
to her schoolmate, Kaya, but also develops an
interest in Fırat, the school counselor. She longs
to prove that what she feels is “different”. She
doesn’t want the same kind of life as her friends
and parents. Deniz is searching for a song no one
has heard: a hopeless love, Ankara instead of
Istanbul, social sciences over natural sciences,
pleasurable solitude…
Zeynep Dadak (Balıkesir)
studied film. A doctoral
candidate at the New
York University, Department of Cinema Studies, she has worked as a
writer/editor for Altyazı, Turkey’s leading monthly film

Emrah has just come back from military service.
He talks to no one and spends hours walking
along highways alone.
Emrah keeps two letters in the drawer next
to his bed. One is a letter he wrote to his exgirlfriend, Sevgi, during military service. The
other is a letter he found on a guerrilla he killed.
Besides the letter, he also found a notebook
and a photo of Zeynep who is the guerrilla’s
girlfriend. Emrah finds out where Zeynep lives
from the address written on the letter. He drops
off the letter, but this doesn’t save him from his
nightmares. Emrah’s uncle finds him a job as a
night security guard at a corporate building.
This means he’s stuck in a small room the whole
night with his continuing problems. When his
mother is taken to hospital, Emrah stays home
alone. Although he meets a girl, he can’t share
his problems with her. Then one morning, Sevgi
calls him. They agree to meet. While the meeting
promises new beginnings for Sevgi, for Emrah it’s
a confrontation.

In a snowy Kurdish mountain village in the east
of Turkey, an old woman, Berfé, and her young
granddaughter, Jiyan, are troubled when Temo Berfé’s son, Jiyan’s father and the only man of
the household - is arrested with the other men
in the village. The local gendarmerie accuses
them of hiding guns and makes it known that
none of them will be released until their families
hand over the guns. The trouble is, there are no
guns, at least not to the knowledge of these two
blameless women. Desperate and alone, Berfé
and Jiyan set off in search of a gun to rescue
their beloved Temo. But how will their innocence
and naivety overcome a system that threatens to
draw them into the sullied world of an interminable conflict? Hüseyin Karabey (1970)
has been making films
since 1996. His involvement in the democracy
movement of the 1990s
and his background as a
documentary filmmaker have influenced the style
and the content of his subsequent work. Despite the
controversial subjects of many of his earlier documentaries and short films, Karabey’s work has still
reached audiences through a number of alternative
channels. My Marlon and Brando, his first dramatic
feature, was selected for the 37th Rotterdam International Film Festival. The film screened at 36 international film festivals and won numerous awards.

sets off for another lake to find it. In the end, she
catches eight of the rare fish and starts feeding

When Kaya discovers the fish at home, he has the

Aysar tied the knot with his Russian neighbour,
Luda, in a marriage of convenience and has already spent the money he charged for the favour.
Luda, who has had eight abortions to date, seems
to have few expectations of life. A Mother’s Day
evening brings the two together not as a married
couple, but as two neighbours, two soul-mates
who have abandoned hope for the future: Aysar, still a child at 35, and Luda, who has turned
down the chance of becoming a mother eight
times. But life is full of surprises, and Aysar and
Luda wake on the morning of a holy day united
by a deep and unshakable human bond. The melancholy Luda has finally taken the plunge against
despair and begun to nurture hope for life and
the future in her belly. So what brought about
the change? This is what the film is about.

In 1986, a cancerous wind blew towards Trabzon
from Chernobyl; it was followed by a wind of ‘Natashas’ a few years later. Battered by these gales,

house which happens to be right next to Cemal’s

One day, she goes to visit Arif Usta (70), Cemal’s
so-called ‘master’. And here she runs into Olga...

Çeşme, a summer resort on Turkey’s Aegean
coast. While it bustles with tourists during the
summer months, the town is calm and deserted
in May. This is when two sisters from Istanbul,
Lale and Yasemin, both in their early 30s, have
to come to Çeşme, their early childhood playground. After five years of minimal communication, the two women find themselves in their
late grandmother’s summer cottage once again.
Initially, everything seems fine: the weather is
beautiful, the sea pristine, and the town basking
in off-season tranquility… But the usual dynamics of sibling comfort and irritability are at play.
Little by little, questions are raised: Why are
these two women really here? And why do they
gradually become so emotionally vicious towards
each other? Once the burden of a devastating secret is revealed, it’s up to them to decide whether this will bring them closer than ever before or
push them apart forever.

Friends there lead Ismail astray, and his weakness

What would happen if an old friend or the person you had been married to for years suddenly
began to think that you weren’t ‘you’? Or if at
that moment you were no longer ‘you’? Or what
would you do if, while all this was going on, you
were confronted with the ‘you’ who couldn’t be
you?
Nobody Comes, Nobody Goes is a psychological
thriller which sets out to raise questions about
individual reality, while at the same time experimenting with word, text, emotion, perception
and fact.

A large and impoverished crowded Kurdish
family leaves Batman for Ankara to work in the
fields every year. Their work, which brings in
a minimal living, is to grow lettuces. But this
year the story takes a different turn when an
unexpected romance emerges and the story the
mother tells her kids in the fields becomes real.
The film also reveals the elaborate process, hard
labor and individual stories involved in bringing
a humble lettuce to dinner tables. What also
emerges is that slavery remains a reality in
modern times.

When the arrival of the official new imam in a
small village is delayed, the villagers decide to
find their own man to lead prayers. After much
discussion, they choose “Bizum Hoca” (Our Hodja), a villager loved and respected by everyone, as
their unofficial stand-in. Our Hodja differs from
the stereotypical imam and is keen to change
some of the villagers’ bad habits. Meanwhile,
the community becomes embroiled in a hotly
contested issue when plans emerge to build one
of the region’s controversial hydroelectric power
plants (HEPP) on a river flowing through the village. Villagers oppose construction of the HEPP
and a battle begins. Our Hodja finds himself leading the villagers who started the protests. When
the official imam, Ekrem, eventually turns up,
the battle continues at a different level, for Our
Hodja is pitched directly against Ekrem, a supporter of HEPPs who tries to convince villagers of
the benefits of the plant. With its focus on a love
of nature and humanity, Our Hodja is a comedy
that looks at religion from a different standpoint.

Hamit drives back and forth between Istanbul’s
slums and a destitute border village close to the
city. He works for Ali, a charcoal dealer-cumhuman trafficker, carrying charcoal one way
and illegal immigrants the other. The young and
timid Mehmet helps them both out and often
finds himself caught in the middle of their power
struggles. Hamit feels stuck in the desolate village. Being subordinate to Ali and sharing a
rundown room with Mehmet are not what he expected of life. He tried to escape once, but failed
to achieve the ‘dream life’ and this only intensifies his frustration. His only comfort is an older
woman, Denise, a foreign botanist who works at
the local research centre. They meet secretly in a
cottage by the sea and make love to the crashing
of the waves. Denise is suspicious of Hamit but
asks no questions, and Hamit doesn’t tell much
anyway. But the sea is unforgiving and pressure
builds as a new group of refugees arrive and are
unable to leave the village. Their relationship is
buffeted like plants in the harsh coastal wind.
And then, one a stormy night, Hamit decides to
change his destiny.

Yunus Emre Voice of Love tells the story of a dervish becoming a poet as he searches for love. It
is the story of love both worldly and divine that
emanates from the depths of Anatolia. An Anatolian villager living in a war-torn land, Yunus rejects the “breath of life” offered by Hacı Bektaş-ı
Veli, contenting himself instead with wheat. The
regret Yunus soon feels over his choice sweeps
him along on a quest for divine love.
The wheat is no more, and neither is Yunus. Now
on the path of divine love, Yunus renounces
the things of this world, and turns a blind eye
to Balım Kızı, the girl to whom he is bound by
worldly love. In his quest for true love Yunus
visits all the great mystics of Anatolia. Without
realizing that what he seeks resides within him…

Ending up in hospital after a traumatic night,
young Deniz has to confront the ghosts of her
past. Her father, Ayhan, a well-known actor, has
been obsessed with Deniz’s sexuality since she
was a child and is pushing her unconsciously
into a life of parties, men and sex. But the lifestyle merely traps her in her childhood traumas.
Helped by a psychiatrist, she slowly recovers and
learns to accept the scars on her body and soul.
Deniz’s search for love and acceptance eventually leads her to a place where she gets to unlock her father’s drawers and discover the reason
behind his obsessions. Her father, Ayhan, was
hiding his “virility” stuffed in drawers away from
everyone but himself. Her salvation comes ultimately through helping others to succeed and
achieve her own dream.

As seasonal forest workers, brothers Kemal and
Cemal struggle with an uncertain future, living in
a house on the outskirts of a village in the western Black Sea Region. One day, Nalân, a prostitute, arrives with Kemal and quickly adopts the
house as her own. Although her presence calms
Cemal, who is shaken by his mother’s death, it
aggravates a growing rift between the brothers.
Nalân is disappointed by Kemal’s increasingly erratic behaviour. Torn between leaving or staying,
she opens herself up to Cemal’s compassionate
world. In this inextricable situation, all three sink
into their own despair.
After Nalân’s departure, the brothers carry on
living like two strangers in the same house. Overcome by feelings of passion, Cemal secretly sees
Nalân. Afraid of losing his brother, Kemal follows
him to the town’s brothel. There, as he confesses
his fears of their possible separation, Nalân appears with a small case in her hand. Unable to
bear Nalân’s return home to Cemal, Kemal succumbs to his jealousy and kills her.

The freight ship, Sarmasik, is to sail to a loading
port in Egypt before continuing with her cargo
to Angola. As she heads south from Istanbul the
ship’s owner goes bankrupt, leaving the crew
unpaid for months. Only when they reach the
Egyptian port do the captain and crew discover
that there is a lien on the ship; this effectively
means they can neither call at the port, nor go
ashore. The ship is ordered to the anchorage
area by the port authority and a skeleton crew
of six required to stay on board in case the ship
has to be moved. Once named, the six have their
passports seized and begin an indefinite wait on
Egyptian shores.

film in New York after
earning a law degree
in Turkey. In addition
to writing and directing five short films,
which screened at various festivals nationally and

Booth, was shown at numerous prestigious international film festivals. Toll Booth is also the first Turkish film ever to have enjoyed a one-week theatrical
run at New York’s MoMA.
They all have different stories, different backgrounds and different reasons for getting away
from Istanbul. Divisions appear between them
early on. Petty conflicts quickly escalate into bigger fights when the food and water run out on
board, and the ship turns into a battlefield where
men hunt men.

Love and Math is a three-character drama about
commitment in the modern world.
The film focuses on a single night in Istanbul,
when two bohemian Turkish women, who have
recently begun a relationship, meet a charming
and quirky math professor from the States. When
they engage in a ménage à trois, one of the girls
ends up jealous and frustrated. The situation
results in three people, regardless of their sexual
orientation, getting into a bitter argument about
whose “honesty” is more honest.
Can Evrenol (Istanbul), studied Cinematography and Art History at the University
of Kent and went on
to attend the NYFA at
Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Since graduating, he has independently written, directed and
produced short horror films. His work has won

In the fall of 1943, Aram, a dissenting poet,
painter and translator of Armenian origin, meets
his lover, Leyla, and his friend and associate, Rasih, in an old manor on Büyükada, the largest of
Istanbul’s Princes’ Islands. The Second World War
is at its most critical point. While cooperating
with the Nazis and expecting a German victory,
the Turkish government imposes Nazi-like policies on minorities and opposition groups in Turkey. Against this background, Aram plans to publish a literary magazine in Turkish and Armenian.
Leyla is concerned by the political atmosphere
and Aram’s cultural identity. Soon, the publishing house owned by Aram and Rasih is raided
by a fascist group with government encouragement. Aram starts staying at secret locations, but
when winter comes, it becomes harder to hide.
In the meantime, many opposition people are
being killed in labour camps or during obligatory
military duty. These recent developments make
Aram even more uneasy due to his opposition
minority identity. Aram reluctantly agrees to his
friend Rasih’s escape plan and soon leaves Istanbul… To the memory of Kirikor Zohrap, Walter
Benjamin and Sabahattin Ali.

Motherland is a subversive and uncompromising
portrait of a woman torn apart by love and hatred for her mother, and struggling to reconcile
the same cultural schisms that divide modern
Turkey. Nesrin is an upper-middle class urban
woman recovering from divorce. She had quit
her office job, abandoned her house in Istanbul,
and came to her parent’s old village in Anatolia
to finish a novel and live out her childhood dream
of being a writer. When her conservative and increasingly unhinged mother turns up uninvited
and refuses to leave, Nesrin’s writing stalls and
her fantasies of village life turn bitter as the two
are forced to confront the darker corners of each
other’s inner worlds.

Every morning, people find a personalized script
delivered to their door and live out this predestined scenario. There is no knowing who wrote
the script; nor does anyone have the nous to ask.
One morning, copywriter Özgür Başarır (33) fails

to a routine error, things soon spiral into evergrowing chaos.
Discovering he has been ousted from the system,
Özgür tries without success to work his way back

artificial past imposed upon them, no one is prepared to give Özgür credence.
Özgür is left with one choice: to act like someone

“If feelings are suppressed, a person’s relationship with existence will be limited to journeys
made into secret lives.”
The need to hide truths, the secret niches one
creates in life and the resulting pressure felt
from the moments of suppression… Exactly like
the relationship established by lies. By examining such human behaviour, The Secret sets out
to describe the age and society we live in, to

Adem is wheeled away on a stretcher, semi-conscious and ranting, “Soda pop.” We cut from the
hospital corridors and flashback years earlier to
Adem’s school. Adem has just finished primary
school. The summer is long. Adem’s father wants
him to work in the tobacco fields, but Adem is
stubborn and persuades his father to let him be
a soda seller’s apprentice… It is Ramadan, the
traditional month of fasting. Despite his young
age, Adem decides that he, too, will fast; when
his family opposes he continues secretly nonetheless. But fasting in the Aegean heat is far from
easy and he also discovers that breaking the fast
ahead of time means 61 days of penance. At the
end of a tiring and difficult day, Adem breaks his
fast with just minutes to go. As he walks desolately along the street, a car pulls up. The strangers inside claim to be friends of his much-loved
‘big brother’, Hasan, and ask Adem to take them
to him. While thinking he is the bearer of good
news, Adem unwittingly brings about Hasan’s
death. As everything begins to blur, we return to
the hospital room at the beginning of the story.
Adem is in the prison infirmary soon after the
1980 military takeover, on the 61st day of a hunger strike.
