Overview / Symposium Theme
Since the beginning of the new millennium, it was apparent that a new phase influencing the
development of architecture and urbanism in the Mediterranean and the Middle East had
begun, when rulers, decision makers, and top government officials developed stronger interest
in architecture and development. With such a sturdy interest many cities in this region are
experiencing rapid growth coupled with fast track urbanization processes, and marked by
large scale work, learning and residential environments, and mixed use developments. This is
witnessed from Istanbul’s intensive urbanization process to Abu-Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island
Development to Bahrain Financial Harbor, and from Kuwait’s City of Silk to the future city
of Qatar, Lusail. Notably, some cities have acquired a geo-strategic importance. Through the
shift of global economic forces, they have developed to central hubs between old economies
of Western Europe and the rising economies of Asia. In the context of international
competition between cities new challenges are emerging.
Architecture and urbanism in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions are viewed as a
crucial catalyst for cities to sustain their position in the milieu of a global knowledge intensive
economy that is identified as the key driver for spatial-urban development, which includes
international services, high tech industries, and trans-cultural higher education institutions.
While a city like Dubai has come to set the stage as an exemplar of a global city, other cities
are inspired, aspired, and are now competing through their architecture and urbanism where
new cities and large scale urban regeneration projects are being constructed or in their
completion phases. Coupled with these developments we are now encountered with the
complex task of translating the so called Global Sustainable Culture into a responsive local
environment. Global warming and climate change imperatives, evidence based planning and
design, health and the built environment are some of the issues that are spread worldwide,
seeking adequate responses from architects and planners.
In light of these developments and the associated theoretical and critical discourses on
contemporary architecture and urbanism, this symposium fosters the understanding and
appreciation of different manifestations in the built environment in the Mediterranean and the
Middle East, while debating the impact of the global condition on local interventions. The
symposium addresses a number of Sub-themes identified as major issues challenging
contemporary architecture and urbanism this part of the world. Interested scholars are
expected to submit contributions addressing one or more of these topics.

Submissions and Guidelines
Anyone interested in presenting their research and/or professional experience in architecture
and planning and related disciplines are welcome to participate in the symposium to share
their work. We, therefore, invite submissions from academy / faculty members, research
students, as well as professionals and researchers from government offices, the private sector,
and NGOs.
Abstracts should be submitted for full paper presentation. Submissions should be made to the
relevant track, which will then be reviewed by Scientific Committee. Contributors should
complete all required information fields on the online submission system and follow the
requirements below:
Abstracts should be written in English,
Text should be 12-point, in Arial Font and justified with single line spacing,
Three to five keywords should be included to indicate which sub-theme the abstract fits most
closely under the track it is submitted.
Author(s) name(s) and all author affiliations should be included.
The name of the presenting author must appear first on the list of authors and indicated by
highlighting the name in bold. Contact email of presenting author should be included.
Abstracts should be text only. Graphics, pictures or graphs should not be submitted.
Abstracts should include:
− Title of Paper
− Author(s) - Presenting author's name to be highlighted in bold
− Institutional Affiliation/Address/Email
− Abstract text (300 words maximum). Suggested subsections: context, central
theme or hypothesis; methodology; expected outcomes and relevance of the work to
planning education, practice or scholarship; preliminary bibliography.
− 3 to 5 key words
Abstracts should be in the following page layout:
− 21 cm x 29.7 cm paper size (A-4 Size)
− Portrait orientation
− Top margin: 2.5 cm or 0.98"
− Bottom margin: 2.5 cm or 0.98"
− Left and right margins: 2.5 cm or 0.98"
− Header and Footer: 1 cm
− Indents - paragraphs of section - none
− Spacing between paragraphs: Single space
Conditions for Submission and Presentation
Participants can present only one paper although they may be co-authors in more papers. In
the event of more than one abstract being accepted, we kindly ask you to withdraw abstracts
as necessary.
In order to be eligible for presentation, authors whose abstracts are accepted will have to
submit their full papers by September 21, 2012. Papers that are sent later than this date cannot
be scheduled for presentation.

Publication of Full Papers
Accepted papers will be published in the symposium CD in digital format and hard copy book
of proceedings and selected papers will be published in Megaron or Archnet-IJAR e-journals.
The papers should be sent in both Megaron and Archnet-IJAR text formats.
Megaron is an official publication of Yıldız Technical University, Faculty of Architecture. It
is anonymously peer-reviewed e-journal that considers for publication original articles,
research briefs, book reviews and viewpoints on planning, architecture, design and
construction.

Archnet-IJAR that is International Journal of Architectural Research is an interdisciplinary
scholarly online publication of architecture, planning, and built environment studies. The
journal aims at establishing a bridge between theory and practice in the fields of architectural
and design research, and urban planning and built environment studies. It reports on the latest
research findings innovative approaches for creating responsive environments, with special
focus on developing countries. The journal has two international boards; advisory and
