September The Temple Bulletin 2009/5769-70 Vol. 70 No. 1 Hebrew Benevolent Congregation Atlanta, Georgia Elul 5769 • Tishrei 5770 When Bad Things Happen to Good People: A Conversation Preparing for Awe • Selichot Saturday, September 12 • 8:00 p.m. Book by Rabbi Harold Kushner Reflections by Rabbis Alvin Sugarman and Peter Berg L’shanah Tovah Tikatevu May you be inscribed for a good year. Our Temple Officers, Board and Staff wish you a happy and healthy New Year. Yom Kippur 9:00 p.m. Dessert Buffet 9:30 p.m. A worship service will conclude the evening and begin our journey into the New Year. We will change the Torah covers to white for the High Holy Day season and conclude the evening at midnight in the darkened chapel where the shofar will be blown. Sukkot Synaplex Spectacular Friday, October 2, 2009 Craig Taubman (Friday Night Live & Hallelu) Craig Taubman’s dynamic music and moving performance style have been an inspiration to the Jewish community for over 22 years. Craig’s magical and enchanting music brings to life the joy and spirit of the Jewish heritage, appealing to young and old alike and captivating audiences wherever he goes. Look for your invitation with all the details. Monday, September 28 We invite our entire congregation to conclude Yom Kippur together as one Temple Family. We hope you, your children and families will remain with us for the concluding n’ilah service as we end the day with an uplifted spirit. Everyone who owns a shofar should bring it with them as we sound the final notes together. Juice, challah and cookies will be served on the front lawn, courtesy of Temple Sisterhood. As has been our custom in the past few years, the Yom Kippur Afternoon Service will step away from the printed liturgy of Gates of Repentance. However, unlike past years, this year’s worship service will incorporate poetry, creative liturgy, and texts exclusively written for The Temple by Dr. Laurie Patton, Charles Howard Candler professor of Religion, Emory University. Our theme, “finding our center”, was inspired by the placement of the Yom Kippur Torah reading, Kedoshim, located at the center of the Torah scroll! We as a people, also seek to find our center and to balance our lives within our families, our communities, and our world. Through liturgy, reflection, the traditional words of Torah, and music, our service will strive to create balance for us as we prepare to embark upon the new year. MAZON As you fast this Yom Kippur, remember that 13 million American children will not break their fast at sundown. Our ancestors left the corners of their fields for the poor and the stranger. What will you leave? Again this year, the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist movements and Hillel International are joining MAZON in fulfilling the biblical mandate to “leave the corners of our fields for the poor and the stranger.” By donating to MAZON what you would have spent to feed yourself and your family on Yom Kippur, you take part in this extraordinary act of Jewish pluralism. Your tax-deductible donation will support MAZON’s grantmaking to programs that provide critical assistance to hungry people in the United States, Israel and developing countries around the world. Envelopes will be on your seats at Yom Kippur services, or mail your donation to: MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger 10495 Santa Monica Blvd Suite 100 Los Angeles, CA 90025 www.mazon.org ATTENTION: All Babies Born in 5769 We would like to celebrate the birth of any new life during our Rosh Hashanah Service on Saturday, September 19, 2009. David Kulman (husband of Margie Kulman) Howard Stahlman (husband of Julie) Doris Ascher David Gordon Wendy Mossler (niece of Nancy Taffel) From the Study of Rabbi Loren Lapidus Are You Prepared? The High Holy Days inspire varying degrees of preparation among Jews around the world. Whether it is making travel plans to visit family or friends, planning meals and finding new recipes, or readying Temple buildings and sermons, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur involve significant amounts of physical preparation that often outshines the no-less-important-task of spiritual preparation. Elul, the month preceding Rosh Hashanah, is identified in our tradition as the time we should be reflecting upon the past year and preparing to come to holiday services ready for teshuvah, or repentance. Often the practical preparations are far easier than the task of spiritually preparing for these holy days. When we are selecting worship services to attend and planning meals, there is a sense of accomplishment since we know when the task is complete. The spiritual realm is obviously less concrete, and only we know when we have done “enough” by our personal definitions. No one says, “You’re done!” Rather, our accomplishment is measured by that sense of calm, that sense of forgiveness from one another and from God, and the feeling that we have done our best in atoning for our past actions and preparing for a new year. Just as the Holy Days ask things of us, we can feel empowered to desire things from these days as well. This year has been difficult for many of us for a variety of reasons. We may be facing the first High Holy Days without a loved one, dealing with unemployment or economic difficulties, or coping with physical or mental illness. All of us are coming to 5770 with our own challenges and fears as well as our hopes and dreams. By reflecting on them in these preparatory weeks, we can be able to be more present in the sacred moments of prayer and community and to feel comfort and support from God and our community. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur can better nourish our souls and make us ready for the coming year if we are able to think in advance about what we want and need from this time. The spiritual preparations for the High Holy Days can be done in innumerable ways depending upon what this past year has brought. Some suggestions include: looking back over the calendar from the past year and identifying times that require some atonement to others or God; writing or calling those from whom we feel we need to ask forgiveness or with whom we want to reconnect; looking at pictures or journaling about a loved one who has died and who will be especially missed during this season; taking time to read Jewish books or meditate on the themes of the High Holy Days; and coming to Selichot or Shabbat services. May we all have a reflective Elul and a meaningful Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. At the end of these Yamim Noraim, these Days of Awe, may we all feel a sense of spiritual comfort from one another, and a sense of the Divine presence in our lives and new year. L’shanah tovah tikateivun, may we all be inscribed for a good year. Mitzvah Day November 1, 2009 Project Coordinators Needed! However, in an effort to conserve space in the monthly bulletin, we will no longer publish the names of those of you who have donated a meal to our residents. Your support is vital to our existence and we hope we can continue to count on you in the future. If you are interested in providing a meal during the upcoming season (October 12-April 30), please contact Arline Browder at arlined@ comcast.net. We are accepting clothing donations for the upcoming season. We will accept the following adult clothing: khakis, jeans, outer wear, career wear, shoes, new (packaged) underwear and socks. We are always in need of plus sizes for women and men’s big and tall sizes. All clothing should be on hangers. We cannot accept children’s clothing. If you need additional information, please contact Patricia Smith, Executive Director at 404-817-2473 or at patricia. [email protected]. You may also email or call the Resident Managers Robert Ponder or Angela Powell prior to arriving with your donation. They can be reached at 404-872-2915, or [email protected], or apowell2903@ gmail.com. We Get Letters… On behalf of myself & our family we wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to Rabbis Berg & Lapidus & all of the staff the made “Camp Temple” so much fun. …within 24 hours the idea to even have the camp let alone plan it was accomplished. We were disappointed after Camp Coleman was cancelled but “Camp Temple” really helped ease the chaos of the change of plans for the parents plus provided a great week of activities for the kids. This is just one more reason why we are so happy to be a part of The Temple family.
