2012-2013 ACADEMIC YEAR VKV KOÇ PRIMARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL RESEARCH TECHNIQUES (GRADES 6-8) 1. SUBJECT OF THE RESEARCH: When we are selecting a subject of research, we need to search about the sources related to it. Choosing the subject for your project in an area that you are interested in (if your teacher didn’t give you a certain subject already) could enhance your success. Once you choose the subject of project, find a group of keywords that will be helpful in carrying out your research. It is important to set a hypothesis. Hypothesis (Assumption): Once you choose a research subject, you make a temporary assumption associated with that subject based on observations and investigations. Please choose one of the following topics and produce an assumption for it. Vital needs of plants Boiling point of water Gravitational force 2. HOW DO WE CARRY OUT AN EFFICIENT RESEARCH? Not all research techniques are appropriate for all subjects. How do we search about sources? Using school library effectively Catalog Online databases Using internet effectively 3. SEARCH ENGINES Double-quote “…………………” If the topic you are searching is a sequence of words, writing it in doublequote would help you filter your search.”School hours” 1 Minus sign (-): If there is an undesired word in the result of your search, just put a - sign to prevent search results including that word. Cell-phone Plus sign (+): If there is another word that we want to search for just put a + sign before that word. Şiir+Orhan Veli Kanık. Equal sign “=”: This is used in converting units to each other For Example: 1 sea-mile =? Kilometers 4. EVALUATION Evaluating, effectively interpreting and reaching the correct information. The most important point is to check the information for correctness through other sources too. Unfortunately, not everything obtained through internet is correct. Then, what are the criteria for this? 5. BIBLIOGRAPHY Bibliography is to give the readers the list of sources that we used in our research. There are two important reasons to give bibliography. One of them is to make them known to the people who would like to learn more about the subject of the project. Second one is academic ethics. What does “academic ethic” mean to you? 6.
