Aim and Contents: The aim of this course is to continue with the translation of the selected extracts from
various genres such as poetry, drama, novel, short story and non-fiction in English and Turkish literatures.
The focus of the course is to analyse the sources of difficulties deriving from cultural and stylistic
differences in translating the literary texts from Turkish to English and from English to Turkish and to offer
alternative ways to solve the basic problems in literary translation. The course aims to give the students the
ability to comprehend how to approach a literary text before and during the translation process. At the end
of the course the students will be equipped with the critical perspective in approaching the literary texts to
translate. There will be preliminary articles that will be discussed with students in relation to literary
translation, after the one or two week-discussion the practical part of the course will begin.

Textbooks: Materials will be suggested to the students by the instructor but the students are welcome to
bring some selected texts from various genres and sources to the class.
Method of Instruction: This course by its nature is an interactive course. The students will offer
alternative ways of translation of the materials, then the best translation will be decided bothe by the
students and the instructor.
Requirements: Attendance is obligatory. More than eleven hours of absence will result in F1. The students
are expected to come to class having translated the assigned texts.
Assessment: There will be two midterms (25% each) and a final (50%). The class participation will be
seriously taken into consideration. Those who take below 50 in the final will fail.
