size. Bu ay da sabaha kadar ışıkların kapanmadığı; lokantalarında insanların kitaplara daldığı; çağdaş sanatçıların

ast month we told you about the historical side of
Moscow, with its legendary Red Square, underground
stations that attract tourists from around the world and
frescoes in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour that have inspired
countless architects’ theses. This month, we thought we’d turn
our attention to the modern Moscow, where the lights stay on
until daybreak, people get lost in books in restaurants, galleries
are filled with the works of contemporary artists and how much
money you spend in a café is directly proportional to the time you
spend there. Here we go!

Propaganda’s DJ line-up has a representative from
virtually every country in the world. The venue, which is
most crowded at brunch and lunch during the day, also
holds the title of being one of Moscow's latest-closing
clubs (Metro: Lubyanka; Bolshoy Zlatoustinskiy Pereulok,
Dom 7).
Solyanka, known for displaying works by young designers in
its boutique, the Thai, Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine on
offer and its breakfast menu to wake you up in the morning, is
especially popular at night with Moscow’s expat community

1 The bus station Bakhmetevsky Garage, designed by
Konstantin Melnikov, considered the Russian Gustave Eiffel, and

original splendour in 2002 by another Russian architect Aleksey
Vorontsov. Today, it is the temple of modern art, especially

Red October Gallery opened in the former Red October
chocolate factory on Bersenevskaya Embankment on the
Moscow River. The paths that crisscross this art complex
located in the centre of Moscow bring to mind New York's
Meatpacking district. Nowadays, this building serves
as a meeting point for Moscow’s media and art world.
It is open every day between 12 pm and 9 pm; entrance

in which you can view the works and slideshow of Russian
and foreign photographers over a cup of coffee. It also
sells certified designer furniture for the office, home and

Bldg. 6).
POBEDA Gallery, located on the third floor of the city's
largest and most luxurious shopping centre, GUM, hosts works
by well-known artists as well as by novice photographers.
Winzawod: This former wine factory, where university
students, artists, architects, and marketing people now hang
out, has spaces open to wall artists, numerous galleries, designer
shops, cafés, and works on display in the garden. I recommend
keeping up-to-date with current events on their website,

Blinis: Blinis are the Russian version of what are commonly
referred to throughout the world as pancakes or crêpes.
They’re served with prawns or caviar if you are in an expensive
stylish restaurant or with cheese and onion if you’re in a local
eatery. Mari Vanna, one of the restaurants of the Ginza
Project, are experts in salmon blinis (10 A, Spiridonevskiy St.).
Pelmeni: Soft Russian ravioli with lots of filling. The
dough is hand-rolled. It is filled with tiny meatballs or cheese
and cabbage, then boiled in water and placed in a serving
dish drizzled with meat stock and butter. Beryozka at 9,
Nikoloyamskaya St. is the best place in Moscow for pelmeni.
Shashlyk: This lamb shish kebab marinated in vinegar,
also present in Turkish cuisine, is the legacy of the 200-year
Mongol invasion of Russia’. Moo-Moo at 45/23 Arbat St. (spelt
My-My in Russian) makes a highly successful shashlyk.
